Three Things to Think About When Hiring an Attorney
Location.
Hiring an attorney from a major metropolitan area, like New York City, Atlanta or Orlando, will likely have an effect on the fees you're going to be required to pay. Also, often lawyers in bigger cities have a higher threshold when it comes to fees, as their rent and cost of living is naturally higher than that of a smaller suburban town.
Experience.
There are a range of criminal charges one can face, and not all attorneys have experience in certain realms of criminal law. Ask targeted questions to your potential lawyer to find out what kind of experience, knowledge and success rate they have regarding cases like yours––especially if your offense and/or the circumstances surrounding it are unique in nature.
Character.
You don't have to want to be best friends with your attorney, but you do have to like or respect him or her on some level. If in your free consultation, your attorney comes off as fake, rude, aloof– or you feel you just don't like or trust him or her–that's your first red flag. Think about the character of the lawyer you hire: They are going to be representing you in front of others, so chances are if you do not trust or like this person, others may feel that vibe too and it won't be in your favor.
