Larry Avallone has devoted more than three decades to the pursuit of justice, serving his community as a law enforcement officer, assistant state attorney, criminal defense attorney, and senior public defender. He is also a Florida Bar Board Certified Specialist in Criminal Trial Law, a distinction held by only a small percentage of attorneys in the state. His experience on every side of the criminal justice system gives clients a rare advantage: he understands, firsthand, how cases are investigated, prosecuted, defended, and resolved, and he anticipates how the other side will build its case before it does.
A lifelong resident of New Smyrna Beach, Larry's commitment to serving his community began in 1994 when he joined the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. During nearly ten years as a Deputy Sheriff, he served in road patrol, as a School Resource Deputy, and as a courtroom bailiff. It was in the courthouse that he developed a passion for the law and decided to attend law school.
After earning his Juris Doctor from Appalachian School of Law in 2006, Larry joined the Office of the State Attorney for Florida's Seventh Judicial Circuit. Over the next eight years, he prosecuted the circuit's most serious felony offenses, including traffic homicide, armed robbery, sexual battery, and other violent crimes. As lead trial counsel in numerous jury trials, he built extensive experience handling complex evidentiary issues, forensic evidence, expert witnesses, and high-stakes litigation.
In 2014, Larry founded Avallone Law, P.A., where he represented individuals facing some of the most serious criminal charges under Florida law, trying felony jury cases, litigating complex pretrial motions, negotiating favorable resolutions, and guiding clients from the earliest stages of an investigation through trial. His reputation for meticulous preparation and courtroom advocacy earned him his Board Certification in Criminal Trial Law.
Most recently, Larry served as Chief Assistant Public Defender for Florida's Seventh Judicial Circuit, acting as Chief of Staff for an office of roughly 125 employees, including nearly 70 attorneys. In that role, he oversaw operations, attorney development, recruitment, and training, and served as Chief of the High Crimes Unit, leading the office's homicide and capital case work. Qualified to serve as first-chair counsel in death penalty cases, Larry has spent much of his career litigating the circuit's most serious and high-profile matters, providing strategic leadership and trial advocacy in cases carrying the highest possible stakes for his clients and for the justice system.
Beyond the courtroom, Larry has dedicated much of his career to teaching and mentoring future legal professionals. He has taught criminal justice courses at the University of Phoenix since 2010 and currently serves as an Adjunct Instructor teaching Criminal Law at Daytona State College. He was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court to the Florida Supreme Court Committee on Standard Jury Instructions in Criminal Cases and previously served on the Florida Bar's Criminal Trial Law Certification Committee.
Larry earned a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida and a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management from Warner University before earning his Juris Doctor from Appalachian School of Law.
