I was born in North Eastern Tennessee in a town called Johnson City. I lived there until I was 7 years old – that was when my family moved to Vero Beach, Florida. While growing up in Vero, I got very involved in music and the band program. I started coming to camp at Stetson University when I was 12, and it quickly became my home away from home. I attended that camp for 6 years throughout middle school and high school, until I graduated and made Stetson University my real home.
Throughout high school I was a die-hard band geek. I wanted to go to college for music performance, but I knew that wasn’t where my true passion was. My passion was in social justice. I loved the idea of standing up for people – especially those who couldn’t do it themselves. When I was a senior, my AP Government teacher took his classes to the Court House one day to watch the legal process in action. That was the day that I fell in love with the law. I knew instantly that it was what I wanted to do with my life.
When I got to Stetson, the first thing I did was join the Mock Trial team, which grew my love for law even more. I was placed on A team as an attorney my first year, and by sophomore year I was President. My passion for law flourished. As an undergraduate preparing for law school, I am a political science major with minors in sociology and philosophy. These disciplines not only teach me how to think like a lawyer, but how to analyze the law, and why our legal system runs the way it does.
When I very first became interested in law, I thought that I wanted to be a prosecutor. I had the same thought many people have “how could you defend someone who breaks the law in such a way?” I brought this very concern up to my mock trial coach one evening, as she is a public defender. She simply looked at me and said, “because this is America, and everyone deserves a defense. It’s their constitutional right.” That moment changed my entire perspective. Defense also aligned with my personal passions more than being a prosecutor would have. I love helping people, and that is what I intend to do with my journey. This journey may have just begun, but I cannot wait to see where it takes me.
