What's the Difference Between a Criminal and a Civil Case?

Court cases are split into two distinct categories: civil and criminal. Businesses and private citizens file civil cases, like divorce and matters of lawsuit. Civil cases usually revolve around seeking finances for damages or loss – or they revolve around spurring the cessation or completion of a certain act. Basically, in a criminal case, you have the government filing against you, and in most cases the consequences are more serious than those of a monetary sense: you could go to jail.

When you're up against a criminal offense, the state or federal government is technically filing a lawsuit against you. Whether you're subject to paying a fine or receiving probation or jail time, a criminal conviction can affect the rest of your life. It can make it hard for you to find a job, a home – and in some cases it can affect your right to drive and/or vote.

Felony and Misdemeanor Offenses

Misdemeanors are crimes of a less serious nature, like theft, for instance. Felonies are more serious crimes, but they can range from first degree (murder) to fourth degree felonies like criminal mischief. Then there are infractions, which would involve traffic violations or other minor crimes.

Whether you're facing drug charges, DUI, trespassing, a white-collar crime, violation of probation, financial crimes, or another criminal offense, request a free consultation with Matt Thompson today and put your mind to rest. Matt will take a personal approach to defending your case so that you can go back to life as usual.
